Abington Bank Sponsors Cotter Tournament
Sponsorship memorializes former chairman
Abington Bank will again serve as the exclusive sponsor of the Shawn P. Cotter Memorial Basketball Tournament, to be held February 21 to 23 at Abington High School. The tournament will feature boys’ and girls’ teams from Abington, Rockland, and Sandwich high schools as well as Cape Cod Academy.
Mr. Cotter was an attorney and a distinguished, lifelong resident of Abington. He also was chairman of the board and a board member of the North Abington Cooperative Bank, later Abington Bank, for more than a decade. Before practicing law, he was a teacher at Abington Jr. High School and coached several sports, including girls’ basketball. He also coached Abington Youth Basketball and was a founder of the Abington Education Foundation.
As exclusive sponsor, Abington Bank will fund all team and MVP awards as well as player and fan t-shirts. The bank also funds two annual scholarships in Mr. Cotter’s name for Abington High graduating seniors. Since 2010, the bank has provided nearly $70,000 in support through the tournament and scholarships in Mr. Cotter’s memory.
“Abington Bank is proud once again to sponsor this annual event in Shawn’s memory, as a testament to his long-lasting commitment to the Abington community and to youth education and sports specifically,” said Andrew J. Raczka, Abington Bank president and CEO. “I’m proud to say I knew Shawn personally. He was perhaps the nicest and kindest person that I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with, and his laugh was unforgettable. It means a lot to so many to have this tournament be part of his legacy.”
